Baptism in Manila

As the San Diego family holds dear its traditional Filipino Catholic roots, it is the heartfelt wish of our Eilonwy’s Filipino family to have her baptised in the Catholic Church, embracing a rite deeply woven into generations of faith and tradition. In Britain, we will also celebrate her arrival with a naming ceremony, honouring the diverse ways in which families welcome new life into the world. As a gay parent, we recognise and respect the significance of these traditions of faith—not only as cultural touchstones but as expressions of love, community, and blessings bestowed upon our child. In uniting these meaningful customs, we embrace a future grounded in both heritage and inclusivity.

A Catholic Tradition of Faith...

In a traditional Filipino Catholic baptismal Mass, the ceremony is deeply rooted in faith and family, often infused with cultural elements that make it distinct. The rite begins with prayers and blessings, followed by the anointing with holy oil, symbolising strength and protection. The child is then baptised with water, marking their formal entry into the Christian faith. What makes Filipino baptisms unique is the strong communal aspect—godparents, known as "ninongs" and "ninangs," play a significant role, not just in the ceremony but in the child's spiritual upbringing. The celebration is often accompanied by festive gatherings, reflecting the Filipino value of togetherness and gratitude. This blend of solemn religious tradition and vibrant cultural expression makes the Filipino Catholic baptism a truly special and heartfelt occasion.
